Hello Mommies,

My LO is almost 5 months old now and her Pediatrician has asked us to start solids for her.  I had a couple of questions around it.  Any ideas/suggestions/experiences regarding the same would be of great help.

1. What are different vegetables that can be safely introduced at this stage? Do the veggies have to be organic until the baby is certain months old? I know Gerber and other brands have ready foods for babies but I would prefer to make it fresh at home.

I have also heard  that some Ped recommend giving Gerber foods only for few months coz there is no danger of any lumps being there which could be a choking hazard. However my Ped was open to home made food. Any recipes, suggestions would  be welcome.

2. Any recommendations on baby food processors?  Are the ones with steam good or is it better to simply steam them directly and puree in a blender/baby food processor? Any recommended brands?
Thanks,
Usha

We started solids at 6 months and puréed veggies and fruits at home. We boiled them in the pressure cooker and used Kidco brand baby food processor/blender for purée.

Hi Usha,

I have a 7 month old and I started semi solids around 5 mnths too. I started with 1 vegetable and gave it to him 3 -5 days just to ensure that he was not allergic to anything. I tried carrots, peas, sweet potato- pressure cooked them and then pureeds it in a regular blender. though i have heard bullet for kids is really good.

Also you can try cereals if you have not already given - i started with oatmeal rather than rice, but now I give gerber rice cereal. You can also giver her daal ka pani.

If you have more questions feel free to mail me at nwahi18@gmail.com

Thanks a lot Vita and Nidhi. Do the veggies have to be organic?
