It's good to take references before hiring them but it doesn't always help. I had hired a nanny earlier with ver good reference but she wasn't good
Talking over phone or email to references will give you an idea if the person is genuine. Language used they way they talk etc you will know
I feel asking how good the nanny is is okay but asking what was not good with her gives us clearer picture
