Recently, i was looking for a nanny for my second child, first one goes to river school. All the nannies that I found through newportmommy were charging pretty high $500 per week on an average. And, when i would ask them to drop my elder one to school by 8:30 and pick him up by 6:15, the charges would simply increase by $50. I finally gave an ad in Sulekha and found a wonderful nanny at $450 per week who will stay with me from 8 to 7 and will fulfill all my needs.
The point of writing this whole story here is that i feel the nannies who are already employed in Newport and neighbouring areas are charging too much. I had a nanny for my elder one till last yearband she was a gem and just charged me $350 per week. I did not expect the rates to shoot up like this. Duting my search for nannies, i read someone mentioning that they have form a union kind of thing and have pre decided rates, timings, etc. If they can be united, why cannot we. I know Supriya is already doing a wonderful job of maintaining the nanny lists to ease our search. I would also suggest if we can maitain the charges for full time, part time helpers, cleaning and cooking charges too then it can help mommies who are new in this area or first time mommies.
Any suggestions are most welcome, also if there is a way that I can contribute in listing the charges, i am ready to collect the stats and post them here.

Thanks,
Swati

PS: I am posting this in the discussion forum after being fully satisfied with nanny i got through Sulekha.

I think getting a survey on nanny salary would be very helpful.

Having an idea of the salary ranges would be very useful. My full-time nanny (who I was paying 500/week 8-6) wants to go part-time. What's the typical per hour charge for part-time ? She tells me her friends are getting 13-15.

Good Thought Swati .. If the nanny's can form a union why cant we Mom's . I was interviewing nanny's for my son a few months ago and most of them were asking $500-550 per week . I finally hired a nanny through reference and paid her $450 per week which I think is the right amount .

Yeah, we need to stand united to curb their rates. In case a mommy needs a nanny urgently due to any issue, i would suggest using this forum to let us know. We can share our nannies for that duration so that a good nanny can be found instead of scummbing to the unecessary rates these nannies charge in such situations.

I think this a great idea.  I have also encountered high rates from part time nannies, part time cooking helpers and full time nannies.  Especially, in my experience most have done just adequate job (nice people  though) and they charge what they do.  I use to have a nanny that charged $450  plus transportation from 8-6 which was the cheapest I found and thought that was ok rate but later found some things I needed her to do she couldn't.  Recently, I have hired part time nanny for $12 per hour plus transportation.  At first I thought you get what you pay for... if you get someone for low cost then they are missing some skills that someone who charges more... but I soon found that not to be true.  I just feel from my personal experience most not all just do child minding duties and are not good at really doing age appropriate stimulating activities with children even if you teach them what to do (unless they are proper nannies who have studied childcare education or genuinely love kids), especially the ones that also do household chores/cooking because they are more focused on that and then the child just sits there idol even though child is safe.  Definitely, the ones who have already worked in Newport charge the most and are the most demanding with other benefits like vacations/holidays and schedules etc. and many see our Newport address or walk into our nice buildings/homes and just assume we all are millionaires here to just keep dishing out extra money.   So I guess one has to weigh how much they are charging and what extras are they bringing to the table in terms of service and skills or flexibility and reliablity and good references.

This is a very useful and important discussion started by Swati. Our nanny started with S450 + $15 for transportation. Within 6 months, she demanded a hike up to $515 per week all inclusive. But since we become dependent on them and the child gets used to them, we as parents have to give in to their demands. I also agree with Jas' point that most of them do not even have the education/skills to stimulate the child intellectually. All they do is housework. I am all for a union of mommies and we should come together and determine appropriate rates and all of us sticking to these rates!!

I totally agree, I am urgently in need of a nanny, I use to pay my nanny 400 per week then she asked for 450 which I paid her. But now she has left because she wanst3 months off for her daughters wedding. So I need to find a new one and everyone I interview is asking for 500 -600 a week for 8-6pm or 12-15/hr.

If anyone knows anyone good with reasonable rates, I'd really appreciate it.

I need someone M-F either 8-7Pm or 8-6PM.

thx!

I just moved to the area over the weekend and my new nanny quit within one day leaving me in a bind. When I was going through the interviewing process, she was aware of all the other nannies that I had spoken to and the terms as well suggesting that they have a pretty well established network between them. She called me up many times during the interview process to ask if I was comfortable with her and that I was definitely going to move ahead with her. In terms of job responsibilities, she also refused to do a lot of things my old nanny used to do saying that it is not in her job profile (e.g., ironing a few of my son's clothes).  After all of this, she came to work on Monday and said she cannot come anymore as she is not feeling well. I am now looking for a new nanny but I was definitely disappointed and disillusioned with the type of nannies that are available in this area where it seems like they are more interested in letting me know what they wont do instead of what they will.

Happy to provide input into nanny rates, job description and agreed upon terms (e.g., no of paid holidays, getting paid for vacation, etc).

Have moms formed union yet! I have been interviewing lately and everyone asks for $550 and so many vacations!! This just gets more difficult. let me know if I can contribute to the content. I like the idea if nanny can find a union, we can too.
Also I think everytime we interview nanny, while discussing rates, we should mention all moms in this area are talking about standardizing nanny rates, which can be $450 a week. This will help spread news faster among nannies - word of mouth is the best communication .

Soniya i agree with your suggestion. Is there any progress to mommy union forming idea?

I keep getting quotes of $750 a week for full time- $15 an hour! Does anyone know anyone in the $400-$500 level who would be available mid January 2015?
