Super cranky kid and how to help them - By Early Childhood Specialist

QUESTION FROM PARENT:

I have a 6 year old super smart daughter. However, every play date or birthday party she goes to ends up in a fight with some other kid, a lot of crying & high drama. It is becoming increasingly painful for me to take her out anywhere. I don't know how to make her get along, help her enjoy these play dates and parties and generally have a good time

RESPONSE FROM…

Parenting: The Days are Long, but the Years are Short by Patricia MacLean

There are a lot of good days when it comes to parenting. Fun days outside or lazy days spent snuggling on the couch. Today was not one of those days. Instead it stretched painfully, gray and dreary like the rain that fell all day. Because Monkey's school was closed, I'd lined up a three-hour Lego class for him while I worked and a trial gymnastics class for both kids in the afternoon. In my mind, the kids would be excited for the change of routine, I'd work efficiently while the…

Halloween: Tricky for Moms, Treat-y for Kids -- by Patricia

Halloween is upon us and while it's a lot of fun for kids, I sometimes think the ghosts of Halloweens past are playing tricks on parents. While the kids get to revel in the joy of costumes and candy, it's up to the parents to juggle holiday fun with logistics.

"What logistics?" you ask. Lets start with the sheer number of events involved in celebrating Halloween. I…

Home Improvement for Renters

Many years ago, I rented in Newport. My husband rented at Towers of America, and our first rental as a couple was in Avalon Cove. And like many of you who are currently renting, I did not know or care much about home improvement. More often than not, I swept minor issues under the rug, since contacting the building’s superintendent would mean taking time off work, and $20-50 in tips. I was also nervous that once he was in the apartment, he would find me guilty of breaking something or…

How to help your child gain weight

I know some of the moms will be furious with me for saying this - but those who have kids that are on the downward slope with regards to weight will hopefully be ok with me writing this.

I am 'petite', and have 2 girls who are delightfully cute but also petite and tend to stay on the early percentiles on the weight chart. The doctors were ok with the older one's weight till a particular time, but when the downward slope did not turn up, they began to…

Part-time Employee, Full-time Mother, by Patricia

It's 5:30 in the morning, a full 90 minutes before my alarm is due to go off. I packed lunches last night, but I forgot to set out the kids outfits and I'm anxious to get them dressed and pack their change of clothes for daycare. A million thoughts go through my head while I try to convince my brain to shut off and sleep. Instead, my mind fails to stop racing, so I get up and start preparing for the day quietly so as not to wake up the kids. …

5 Minute Mug cake

Who doesn't like the idea of having a dessert without hours of toil going into it?  This recipe is perfect for days specially weekends when one is not ready to spend more time in the kitchen and idea is to calm your sweet tooth craving.

I have tried many instant cake recipes but this one came out the best. Its moist and has the perfect proportion of all the ingredients. You can also add fruit preserves of your choice to add more flavor or scoop caramel ice-cream on the top and dig…

Grilled Cottage Cheese!

Simple is beautiful. Sometimes the most simple of ingredients and flavors are enough to make a perfect recipe. This is one such quick and easy recipe with some basic ingredients. This is one finger food I used to have as a child. Cottage cheese or Paneer is high in protein and covers good amount of daily calcium intake that our body requires.

Whole Wheat Pizza!

Pizza is generally considered as an unhealthy food option. We do hesitate to give it to kids because of the large amount of carbohydrate and fat which the  ingredients provide. But what if we change the refined white flour to whole wheat flour, the bottled sauce to home-made tomato sauce made from scratch and top it with goodness of all fresh vegetables and herbs.

Here's my attempt to make a healthy pizza of the otherwise infamous unhealthy food option.…

Mango Upside-down Eggless Cake!

My penchant for something sweet after a meal is hereditary. For me no meal is ever complete without the last bite of something sweet. the idea of baking this beautiful mango upside down cake after I saw it on one of the cooking channel on television. Just the look of it was so inviting that I couldn't resist it trying it myself.…

How Much Cash Reserve Should a Condominium Association Have?

My real estate practice is focused in Hoboken and Jersey City, NJ, where a large majority of properties are in condominium form. As such, one of the most common questions in buyers' minds is “How Much Cash Reserve Should a Condominium Association Have?” This number is important, since it indicates if the condominium association is in good financial health to make all necessary repairs to the common areas, which are crucial in preserving and increasing the value of the individual unit.…

HOPE FOR CURE : TYPE 1 TO TYPE NONE

April 3rd, 2014 changed our lives. Our 2 year old son, Yohan was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Until that day, I did not know the existence of type 1 diabetes. I did not know that millions are living with this chronic illness every day. I did not know that every year 13000 children are diagnosed with this disease and this number keeps increasing. Until that day, I did not know that there is no CURE…
